Repairs & Modifications
Repairs and Maintenance
The largest part of our operation includes a range of repairs and alterations to all types of firearms. If you have something that needs to be repaired, there is a good chance that it can be done. One off hand made parts can be expensive because of the time involved but it is worth checking before you put it in the "too hard" or "too expensive" basket as new and second hand parts are often available at reasonable prices. This section also covers modifications and improvements to new firearms and all servicing requirements.
We are also able to provide yearly checks and servicing of firearms for Government Departments and Security Service providers.
Action Blue Printing
Action Blue Printing
Blue Printing is done using the latest methods and tools available to achieve that precision fit. Actions and associated parts that are critical to the accuracy of the rifle are dialled in, bolt and action lugs are re-cut, receiver faces are re-cut, threads are re-cut and bolts may have bands fitted to reduce play. Recoil lugs can have their surfaces re-cut, or have lugs specially made for BRNO 22 R.F rifles and alike.
We have the latest in Remington 700's bolt-way reamers and precision ground replacement bolts that can be supplied with fluting to self clean without compromising tolerances.
Re-barrelling mostly includes the supply of a barrel from various barrel manufacturers, depending on the requirement of the firearm and the fitting of it to the action. Our fitting of the barrel will be dialled in using bore indicators rods with precision ground pilots fitted or bore dials depending on the bore size. Chambers are cut using a floating reamer holder for increased accuracy of case to bore alignment and are polished to the requirements of the calibre. Any type of crown is included and barrels are given a basic blue or finished to a 700 grit as standard, high polish blues bead blasting and paint finishes will be extra.
All re-barrelling will be test fired where applicable, sights will only be bore sighted when collected.
We supply a variety of blueing services for your firearms, depending on your firearms type. Some firearms can be blued whilst others cannot. For example our "Hot Blueing" will give a lovely deep blue to your firearm as long as the quality of the firearm is good and there is no soft solder holding sights, ribs or bands on. If the quality is reduced or soft sold is present a "Rust Blueing" is performed. This technique is used on shotguns, classic big game rifles and to surfaces that may show up too many imperfections using the hot blue method. Rust blueing produces a wonderful soft matte blue.
Firearms that were originally browned can be re-done. We can also refinish Damascus barrels, as per original.
Recoil pads can be poorly fitted and may become hard, brittle and rotten over time. Some firearms may have no recoil pads fitted at all. Generally we supply a Pachmayr® Decelerator recoil pad but we are able to supply others or use one supplied by the customer to fit. Installation of a pad may improve gun handling and reduce felt recoil. Quality pads will also enhance gun appearance.
Some pads can have leather covers installed as seen on classic big game rifles.
Do you have an antique, heirloom, or that piece that you've always wanted to do up, or an old faithful that may be getting neglected? Well, we can refurbish it for you, from a basic strip and clean up to a full "back to new" restoration.
Show us what you have in mind and we will go through with you the best possible options. Sometimes antiques are best left original and only professionally cleaned.
When bedding we use "Armagrout" which is a two part epoxy specifically formulated for our firearms.
We offer a variety of bedding types including; a basic "bed" of the action, a more common "bed and float" where by we can fully float the barrel, or support float half an inch forward of the action, taking the total strain off the action, or a "pillar bed and float". This has the added benefit of having an accurate action to stock fit reducing any varied compression issues between the action and stock when using specific torque setting on the action bolts. This is important if the action is removed regularly for inspection and cleaning.
We also offer cross-bolt installation for that added strength, reducing the risk of stock separation.
We offer a range of shotgun modifications from fitting adjustable recoil pad hardware to the installation of comb riser kits, which allows you to fine tune your standard shotgun, given an improved fit.
We can improve your shotgun by cutting long forcing cones, install "screw in" choke tubes, hone and polish barrels, install front and intermediate sight beads, or give the shotgun a full service. We can do professional tightening of under and over and side by side actions including forends and re-ribbing.
Most of the firearms sold in Australia are typically fitted with stocks designed for the "average" shooter. How many "average" shooters do you see? No two shooters are built the same. We all vary in height, weight, arm length, face, neck, and size and shape of our hands. A correctly fitted stock will help the shooter to get on target quickly and staying on, as the shooters eye will automatically line up behind the sights.
Our stock work consists of a custom crafted stock to suit your exact needs rather than having to put up with those factory fits. We can supply the stock blanks or the customer can bring their own. We are able to individually craft new stocks or use a variety of pre-designed shapes that have stood the test of time, we can have replace the wood work while maintaining the original shape that you have come to appreciate. We also replace missing or broken timber stocks.
We have a range of finishes that appeal to the customer. Our timber finishes include a hand rubbed finish. A "tru oil" finish that after being built up in layers is cut and polished back to create a soft glow. We also offer an durable urethane finish.
We have Cerakote™ finishes for actions, barrels and moving parts in a variety of colours. We carry a durable baked on coating, ambient curing products as well as coatings that reduces friction between metal to metal surface, ie bolts and bolt ways.
Colour Case Hardening
The time honoured technique of colour case hardening can show off a rifle or shotgun's beauty as well as a making it as durable as it was when new. Case hardening puts a tough outer layer on the steel while leaving the inner core soft and flexible. We do Pack hardening using bone, leather and wood charcoal which is quenched under specific conditions (the same way it was originally done).
It must be pointed out that some modern steels should not be case hardened but this can be discussed.
Gun Case Refurbishment
Gun Case Refurbishment
Sunshine Coast Gunsmithing can now offer our customers a new service - to fully restore English gun cases. They are done in Australia by an Australian craftsman. Interiors can also be refitted for non original guns.
We would also like to buy any old cases for parts – regardless of condition.
We are licensed to render firearms permanently inoperable and provide the holder of the firearm a certificate of proof. They can then be kept without requiring safe storage and can also be given to others or sold on (as long as the certificate accompanies the firearm).
So if you are choosing to cancel your shooters licence, you can still get to keep that personal treasure or heirloom if it is made inoperable. In the majority of cases this can be done without any outward signs of this taking place
